Avantgarden Gallery presenta “Now and Later”, per la prima volta a Milano la personale di Chris Ellis, noto con la tag: Daze e riconosciuto come uno dei maestri del movimento dei graffiti.
Daze ha iniziato come writer nella New York degli anni ’70 mentre frequentava la Scuola Superiore di Arte e Design. I suoi graffiti hanno connotato il territorio urbano di quegli anni, dai muri ai treni ai vagoni delle metropolitane.
Le opere di Daze sono come fotoromanzi comici, animati da figure inquietanti e ironiche. L’artista, ispirandosi ai sobborghi alienanti e poveri della sua città ha ritratto prostitute, poliziotti, artisti e musicisti che popolavano le strade della New York di quegli anni. In seguito Daze ha esteso la sua visione artistica oltre la strada e ha vissuto con successo la transizione dalle metropolitane allo studio; negli anni novanta troviamo le sue opere nelle gallerie di tutto il mondo. La sua prima mostra collettiva è stata “Beyond Words”, presso il Mudd Club di New York nel 1981, esponendo insieme a maestri come Jean Michel Basquiat e Keith Haring. La sua prima mostra personale si è tenuta un anno dopo, nel 1982 a Fashion Moda, una galleria nel Bronx. Da allora ha avuto innumerevoli mostre personali in svariate città come Montecarlo, Hong Kong, Parigi, New York, Pechino, Chicago e Singapore.
Un motivo ricorrente nelle opere di Daze è l’occhio umano, rappresentato con una pittura gestuale, dal significato mutevole in ogni opera. In alcuni casi suggerisce uno stato onirico della mente, dove tutto può essere immaginato, in altri casi è un simbolo che permette di scrutare il passato o le possibilità del futuro. Nella mostra di Milano ci saranno quadri realizzati da una stratificazione di immagini tratte dal lessico personale di Daze, frammenti di lettere che riportano ai primi anni di pittura metropolitana e alla sua capacità di fondere il lettering con l’immagine che rappresenta una sorta di firma dell’artista. Nell’arco di svariati anni Daze ha anche portato a termine molti progetti di arte pubblica, tra cui il completamento di un murale per lo Star Terminal dei traghetti di Hong Kong, la progettazione e realizzazione dell’intero arredo della stazione ferroviaria di Hannover, in Germania, al fianco di altri artisti come Lee Quinones e Crash ed un murale per il centro commerciale Vivo City a Singapore.
Le opere di Daze sono in musei come il MoMa di New York, il Brooklyn Museum, il New York City Museum, il Groninger Museum in Olanda, il Museo Ludwig di Aachen, Germania, Smithsonian National Museum for African American History and Culture, Washington, DC e nelle più importanti collezioni private come quelle di Madonna e di Eric Clapton.
Non solo, la sua figura artistica compare in due film di riferimento per quanto riguarda la cultura hip hop e la corrente dei graffiti: “Wild Style” 1888, diretto da Charlie Ahearn e “Style Wars”, 1981, diretto da Henry Chalfont and Tony Silvers.Daze è menzionato anche in bestsellers che raccontano le origini della Street Art e approfondiscono le figure che l’hanno generata, tra questi: “Subway Art” di Henry Chalfant e Martha Cooper, 1984;”Spray Can Art” di Henry Chalfant e James Prigoff, 1987; “Subway Graffiti” di Thomas Christ, 1983; “Wild Style” Tokyo Japan, 1983, diretto da Charlie Ahearn. Dopo la mostra personale a Palazzo Pepoli a Bologna e questa tappa milanese, a giugno presenterà il libro “Dazeworld” edito da Schiffer Publishing.

One man show of one of the masters of the graffiti movement

Avantgarden Gallery presents, for the first time in Milan, “Now and Later”, by Chris Ellis, known by the tag Daze and considered as one of the masters of the graffiti movement.
Daze started as a writer in New York in the 70’s, while attending the High School of Art and Design. His graffiti works have characterized the urban territory of those years, from walls to trains and to metro wagons.
Daze’s works are like comic picture stories, animated by disturbing and ironic figures. The artist, inspired by alienating suburbs and poor people of his city, portrayed prostitutes, policemen, artists and musicians who populated New York streets of those years.
Later Daze has extended his artistic vision beyond the road and lived a successful transition from the metropolitan to the studio (atelier ?); in the nineties we find his works in galleries worldwide. His first exhibition was “Beyond Words” at the Mudd Club of New York in 1981, exposing along with artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. His first solo exhibition was held one year later, in 1982 at Fashion Moda, a gallery in the Bronx. Since then he has had numerous solo exhibitions in various cities such as Monte Carlo, Hong Kong, Paris, New York, Beijing, Chicago and Singapore.
A recurring theme in the works of Daze is the human eye, represented with a gestural painting, from the changing meaning in every work. In some cases it suggests a dreamlike state of mind, where everything can be imagined, in other cases it is a symbol that allows you to peer into the past and the possibilities of the future.
In the exhibition in Milan there will be paintings made by a layering of images from the personal Daze’s lexicon , fragments of letters that show the early years of underground painting and its ability to merge the lettering with the image that is a sort of artist’s signature. Over several years Daze has also completed many public art projects, including the completion of a mural for the Star Ferry Terminal, Hong Kong, the design and construction of the entire furniture of Hanover Train Station, in Germany, alongside other artists like Lee Quinones and Crash and a mural for the mall Vivo City in Singapore.
